President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office to Bilawal at his official residence and office. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was present at the time. A notification issued by the Cabinet Division later said that Bilawal has been given charge of the foreign ministry.

Bilawal has made history by taking charge as the foreign minister. Bilawal, son of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, took over at the age of 33 years, 6 months and 7 days. He is now the youngest foreign minister of Pakistan. Earlier, the record was held by Hina Rabbani Khar, the leader of Bilawal’s party. Hina Rabbani, 33 years, 6 months and 1 day old, was appointed Foreign Minister. Hina served as Foreign Minister from 2011 to 2013. Hina Rabbani is the current Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the youngest foreign minister of Pakistan before Hina Rabbani. He was 35 years, 5 months and 10 days old when he took over as Foreign Minister.

Bilawal was elected a member of the National Assembly for the first time in 2016. However, this is the first time he has been given the responsibility as a minister.

After being sworn in as foreign minister, Bilawal visited the Chinese embassy in Islamabad. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani was with him at the time. Bilawal expressed his condolences to the embassy staff over the killing of three Chinese nationals in a suicide attack at Karachi University.
