Nine teenagers and four women have died after falling into a well during a wedding ceremony in India’s Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district.
The Hindustan Times quoted local police as saying.
Police said the women had gathered on and around a Dhaka well for the ‘Gaye Halud’ ceremony on Wednesday. The event is locally known as ‘Matkodva’ in the Nawbia Nawrangpur area of Kushinagar district. Suddenly, the lid of the well broke, unable to bear the weight of the women. Some women fell into the well.
Initially, a total of 13 people, including nine minors, were killed.
According to the report, many more women were injured in that tragic incident. The injured were rushed to a local hospital.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have expressed their condolences over the incident.
In a tweet, Narendra Modi said, “The accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh is heartbreaking. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The local administration is providing all possible assistance.
