The Steelers need to add another weapon or two surrounding Kenny Pickett, but which route will they go?

With the newly-adjusted salary cap, the Pittsburgh Steelers might have to get creative this offseason.

One luxury they have, however, is knowing that they have their franchise quarterback in Kenny Pickett. In order for him to take a leap in 2023, though, Pittsburgh will need to add a little more talent.

The offensive line needs work, but for the sake of this argument, we’re focusing on weapons at Pickett’s disposal. Who could the Steelers look to add? Let’s start with a trade candidate.

One trade to get Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett another weapon: Aaron Jones

The Packers could look to cut or trade running back Aaron Jones this spring, who carries a 2023 salary of $8.1 million. Green Bay could be strapped for cash, and depending on what Aaron Rodgers decides to do, the Packers might look a whole lot different next season.

Pittsburgh has Najee Harris, but some wonder whether he has already shown who he is and if he’s hit his ceiling in the NFL. Part of the problem is undoubtedly the blocking in front of him, but pairing him in a time share with another capable back would also help keep him fresh and allow the offense to open things up.

Pittsburgh would have to figure out their cap space, of course, and need to open up room for Jones’ contract. But, Jones’ pass-catching prowess would add another dimension to the offense that’s been missing. Harris is a between-the-tackles back, while Jones can do it all.

Pittsburgh’s offense could take another leap if they added a talented back like Jones, who is 28 years old and likely has one or two more good years left in him. The idea of playing in a dual-back offense with the Packers has also allowed Jones to prolong his career, and he’d be doing the same with the Steelers.
