Eagles safety savagely defends Nick Sirianni from division rival’s smack talk

Philadelphia Eagles safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson responded to New York Giants defensive back Julian Love’s critical comments about head coach Nick Sirianni.

The Philadelphia Eagles held a head coaching search after the 2020 season and hired then-Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. Just two years into his tenure, he has proven to be the right choice, as he led the team to the Super Bowl.

While Philadelphia fans have grown to love Sirianni, he has gotten under the skin of division rivals for his animated behavior on the sidelines, including their fans and players.

Last week, New York Giants safety Julian Love appeared on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” and said that Sirianni was receiving “a free ride” to the Super Bowl due to how stacked the roster is. These comments were not received well by those in Philadelphia and in the Eagles locker room, most notably defensive end Brandon Graham, who came to the defense of his head coach.

The latest Eagles player to defend Sirianni is safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who didn’t mince words when responding to Love.

“Tell him to pick his facemask off the dirt,” said Gardner-Johnson, via PhillyVoice.com. “He’s got a captain badge, but what is he a captain of? Ain’t no leadership over there. If that’s the case, y’all would be where we’re at.”

While Love may have expressed what others have been feeling about Sirianni, it doesn’t really help his case that the Eagles blew out the Giants 38-7 in the Divisional Round game. And considering that Gardner-Johnson has been known for his trash talk dating back to his time with the New Orleans Saints, it should come as no surprise that he did not hold back against Love.

Love insinuated that anyone on the “Good Morning Football” show could coach the Eagles and make it to the Super Bowl. He then doubled down in a since-deleted tweet:

“Philly fans sure don’t like this one lol,” Love said, h/t ProFootballTalk. “But I’m not wrong. This is a players league, and Philly has dogs on the roster top to bottom. It’s no mystery why they’re in this position.”

Sirianni did respond to Love’s criticism and clarified the image of him nodding his head towards the camera in the Divisional Round. The head coach said he’s not going to pretend he’s someone he’s not.

“As far as that goes, the secret to good coaching is to get good players, put them in good positions to succeed, and help them get better,” Sirianni said, h/t NJ.com. “That’s what the secret of good coaching is. I think a lot has been made about when I looked into the camera and did that. But to me, the camera got right in my face. We went up 21-0, and we were having fun. I’m not going to be somebody who I’m not. I’m going to have fun on the sideline, and I’m going to yell and scream on the sideline.”

It’s unknown how Super Bowl 57 will end. What is known is that the Eagles-Giants games are going to be much more heated than usual.
