DeVonta Smith can make Alabama history with Super Bowl win

With a win for the Eagles in the Super Bowl, former Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith would join the rarest of college football company.

The list of football players who have won the Heisman Trophy, a national championship in college and a Super Bowl is short. DeVonta Smith could make it just a bit longer.

Smith is going to the Super Bowl with the Eagles and fellow ex-Alabama star Jalen Hurts after Philadelphia downed the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. If he wins it, he would join just four others to have hit the trifecta of ultimate football excellence.

As it stands, USC’s Marcus Allen and Reggie Bush, Michigan’s Charles Woodson and Pitt’s Tony Dorsett are the only ones to have hoisted all three of those trophies. Smith would be the first ever for Alabama.

DeVonta Smith would join all-time Heisman greats as Super Bowl winner

Allen was the MVP of Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders after winning the Heisman in 1981 and the national title in 1978. Bush made it a double for USC with his Super Bowl XLIV victory with the Saints. He won the Heisman in 2005 after winning national championships in 2003 and 2004.

Woodson joined the club in 2011 as the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. He led Michigan to a national championship in 1997, the same year he took home the Heisman.

Dorsett was the first to do it. He won his Heisman in 1976 along with the national championship for Pitt then went on to triumph in Super Bowl XII just one year later as a star rookie for the Cowboys.

Smith grabbed Alabama’s fourth Heisman Trophy in 2020 before going off for 12 catches, 215 yards and three touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s CFP title game victory over Ohio State. The Eagles selected him with the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and he’s wasted no time establishing himself as a dangerous receiving weapon at the pro level. He caught 95 passes for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2022 season.
