‘Bangladesh is the only country, but we are not defaulters’

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Bangladesh is the only country but we are not defaulters. We borrowed as much as we could. We have repaid every loan on time. Even in Corona, we did not default.

He made the remarks while exchanging views with officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Monday, dismissing fears that Bangladesh could face the same fate as Sri Lanka due to rising foreign debt.

Referring to Sri Lanka, which is in the throes of debt, the Prime Minister said, “Those who are writing various things against us.” I am saying again- I do not run the state after reading the writings of that newspaper. Now they can confuse people. Bangladesh is becoming Sri Lanka – such a rumor is circulating.

“We are cautious about taking foreign loans and investments for development. We are cooperating for development, that’s right,” he said. But we have an account. Bangladesh is the only country, but we are not defaulters. We borrowed as much as we could. We have repaid every loan on time. Even in Corona, we did not default.

The Prime Minister said that he gave priority to the welfare of the people in taking loans.

“The second thing is that the development program that we take is right, but we take into account when we take it,” he said. How much we borrow from where and how much we will benefit from the development that we are doing; What is the return from this development, how much will be involved in the welfare of the people, we are aware of this return.

“Every time I plan, I calculate how much the people of my country will get after doing this, how much will be added to my economy, how strong the economy will be,” he said. I will be able to give as much as I can for the welfare of the people. That’s what we think.

The Prime Minister said that the investment will be acceptable to me, through which my country will be profitable. An investment came, and a huge thing was made, so it was of no use to me. There we go a little slower.

He further said that the people of the country should keep in mind the extent to which their destiny will change. Otherwise the way everyone is jumping for investment. But we have to calculate a lot. This I would very kindly request everyone.

Not wanting an investment that is not good for the country, the Prime Minister said, many will think – yes investment is coming, why we are not taking? But we have to think about what Bangladesh will get in return, what the people of Bangladesh will get, how much we can invest in the welfare of the country. We will not do what is not good for my country.

“It simply came to our notice then. But those who will try to do what Sri Lanka has done, we will be under pressure, so to speak. No one can harm us if we are careful – that is my belief.
