Are Sister Wives’ Kody Brown and Meri Still Together? Inside Their Spiritual Marriage

Rocky road. Sister Wives stars Kody Brown and his first wife, Meri Brown, were married in 1990, before legally divorcing in 2014 and remaining spiritually married since then. Ever since Kody’s ex-wife, Christine Brown, made the shocking announcement she was leaving Kody in November 2021, hints and clues pointed to trouble in paradise between Kody and Meri. Nevertheless, the former pair have talked about reconciling. So, is there a chance that they’re still together?

Meri Confirms Her Split From Kody

In a teaser clip for the December 18 special Sister Wives: One-on-One shared by People, Meri confirmed that her marriage to Kody was over after 32 years.

While talking to host Sukanya Krishnan, the TV personality watched a clip of Kody stating that he doesn’t consider himself married to his first wife. “If she wanted to move on and marry another, she wouldn’t get *IN? an argument with me,” he said in a confessional.

“It just doesn’t make sense to me that he would be so frustrated with Christine and be like, ‘She just made this decision. We didn’t consult, we didn’t talk, she just made the decision and then he says, ‘No, I don’t consider myself married to Meri,’” Meri said in response to Kody’s comment. “Like, he just made the decision. I’ve never heard him say that to me.”

Despite having problems for years, Meri said that she was having a hard time accepting the end of their marriage.

“Even since being in Flagstaff, he has led me to believe that he was trying,” she said. “You know, our first anniversary that we had here in Flagstaff, it was cheers to a new beginning as opposed to this last anniversary he’s like, ‘I don’t even know why you called me Meri.’ He’s like, ‘We’re not married. We’re not acting as married.’”

Meri added, “I said to him, ‘Then if that’s where we are, don’t you think that we should address that publicly?’ And he said, ‘No I don’t want to address it. I don’t want that to be out there publicly because I don’t want that judgment.’”

When asked where she stands with Kody, the mother of one replied, “Well, he’s already made the decision. You just saw him say that.”

While Kody feels that their marriage is over, Meri said she is willing to work on fixing things. However, she doesn’t think Kody is “interested” in making things work.

Do Kody and Meri Want to Reconcile?

Although Meri thinks Kody doesn’t want to reunite, he recounted the moment when he did, apparently, try to reconcile with her but accused Christine of shutting it down.

“When we moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, I was trying to reconcile with Meri,” Kody claimed during part 1 of the Sister Wives: One on One tell-all. “Meri gave me this really cool present, and I’m in this place telling Janelle, Christine and Robyn that I might reconcile with Meri. And Christine just lost her s—t.”

However, the Cooking With Just Christine star denied the claim, noting, “That’s really absolutely frustrating and offensive right now. There’s no way I would not support him and Meri having a great relationship if that’s what they both wanted. That’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Meri Responded Cryptically After a Fan Told Her to Follow Christine’s Example

After Meri shared a photo of herself with Christine, a fan wrote in the comments, “I hope she helps you see your worth and that you move on from Kody and his hold on you.” In her response, Meri avoided bringing up her relationship with Kody but wrote, “Oh don’t worry, I know my worth.”

Just over one year after Christine announced their split, In Touch exclusively confirmed Janelle Brown and Kody had called it quits in December 2022. “Janelle is a strong independent woman and realized she can do it on her own,” an source claimed, adding that the mother of six “outgrew him.”

Meri Celebrated Her 51st Birthday Without Kody

Meri rang in her 51st birthday on January 16, 2022, sans Kody. “Meet Meri 5.1! The newest version, the most up to date model, more powerful, stronger, and able to handle all that’s thrown at her. She’s been around for a while, but every version is a little better, a little more dynamic, a little more energetic, a little more influential,” Meri shared in an Instagram caption that day. “She has the capacity for greatness, abundance and strength. She’s got visions, dreams, and goals, and is on a trajectory to hit them all, and then some. She feels deeply, loves completely, and gives freely. She’s ready to conquer!”

Meri Has Said She Felt Like ‘an Outsider’ in Her Marriage With Kody

In an episode that aired on January 9, 2022, Meri told Kody’s fourth wife, Robyn Brown, “I am an outsider.” She later added in a confessional, “I don’t feel like I am part of the Brown family. It’s this weird thing. Am I a sister wife when I don’t have a husband? And I have a husband, technically, but do I? … It’s weird.”

Kody Told Meri, ‘We’re Friends’

“Kody and I — we had a conversation recently, that kind of came down to, ‘We’re friends.’ Which I guess is a good thing. I guess I just have hope for more than that,” Meri said in a December 2021 episode. “Kody has said some things to me more recently that leads me to believe that there’s no repairing our relationship.”

“If I quit and I walk away, then it’s not going to get better,” she added. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Following Meri’s admission that Kody considers Meri to be a friend, he said that he doesn’t communicate with her every day. “I always saw one of the main benefits about plural marriage is that anybody in the family would never actually suffer true loneliness,” he said in his own solo confessional. “The way things have played out for our family, that’s not necessarily true. My relationship with Meri is not the type of relationship where I’m going to talk to her every day.”

Meri Has ‘Considered’ Leaving Kody Before Split

In promos for season 17 of Sister Wives, Meri admitted that she had “considered everything,” including parting ways with Kody.

However, in spite of all signs that seem to indicate that their marriage is more of a friendship, the two seem to be together for the long haul.

In fact, the TLC star said she was “committed” to Kody and is “not going anywhere” in an Instagram post from December 2020.

“Let’s just clarify something here. I love this man,” Meri wrote in the caption. “Sure we’ve had ups and downs through the years (I mean, isn’t that somewhat normal?) High highs and low lows. … But here’s my truth. I love him. I love my family. I’m committed. I have 30 years in this. We struggle. We communicate. We repair relationships as the parties involved are willing and able.”

However, amid continued speculation surrounding their marital troubles, Meri shared a cryptic Instagram post in September 2022, teasing that there’s “so much more to the story.”

When Did Meri First Spark Speculation That She Was Single?

In October 2022, the Lizzie’s Heritage Inn owner shared photos and videos from her trip to Disneyland alongside a pal named Blair Struble. Fans soon wondered if this was a new beau in her life.

“Meri got a man,” one fan commented under one of her Instagram posts featuring her friend. “Who is the guy?” another asked, whereas a third wrote, “Single life suits you.”

However, other commenters were quick to mention that Blair was just Meri’s friend.

Meri Has a ‘Found Family’

While doing a TikTok Live in November 2022, Christine’s daughter Gwendlyn Brown offered some insight about Meri after a fan asked if she and Robyn are “still close.”

“I think so. Meri is a hot commodity now in her friend group. You know how people have ‘found families?’ Meri has a ‘found family,’” Gwendlyn told her best friend, Sarah, who joined her for the live Q&A. “So, obviously she shows up for us, but she’s better off around them, so she tends to hang out with them more because they’re kinder to her.”
