2023 NFL Draft compensatory picks announced: 49ers clean up

Out of the 37 compensatory 2023 NFL Draft picks that were announced by the league, the San Francisco 49ers led in a huge way.

The San Francisco 49ers‘ recent success can be attributed to their ability to scout talent in college, select them in the NFL Draft, and develop them into legit starters at the professional level. As a result of their talent, coaching, and drafting, they made it to the NFC Championship Game three times in the past four years. Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the 49ers got even more picks to utilize at the three-day event from Apr. 27-29.

On Thursday, the NFL officially announced the compensatory picks given to eligible teams. Out of the 37 picks rewarded, the 49ers cleaned up with seven, including three third-round picks. Those three third-rounders were given based off the league’s initiative for teams to develop minority candidates into future head coaches and general managers of new teams.

How the 3rd-round compensatory picks were determined:

Cardinals: Christian Kirk
Commanders: Brandon Scherff
Browns: Kwesi Adofo-Mensah
49ers: Robert Saleh/Martin Mayhew
Chiefs: Ryan Poles
49ers: Mike McDaniel
49ers: DeMeco Ryans/Ran Carthon https://t.co/gKz5QHAHrQ

San Francisco’s other four draft picks were given to them after their net loss of qualified free agents last offseason. As ESPN’s Nick Wagoner points out, the 49ers gained cornerback Charvarius Ward, but lost running back Raheem Mostert, offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, cornerback K’Wuan Williams, and defensive linemen Arden Key and D.J. Jones last offseason.
